Samsung Galaxy S20 and S20+ Specification, Price, Release Date and Comparison

The day chosen by Samsung to renew its Galaxy S line has arrived and we already have among us, in addition to the new Galaxy Z Flip folding phone, the three models of the S20 family: Galaxy S20 Ultra, Galaxy S20 + and Galaxy S20. Leaving aside the first of them - the most advanced -, the last two arrive to succeed the Galaxy S10 + and the Galaxy S10, respectively and do so fulfilling everything that had been leaked so far, both in terms of design as to its benefits.

Both smartphones bring the Exynos 990 as a brain and are compatible with the 5G NSA and SA networks, but differ in the dimensions, in the battery and, mainly, in the rear camera: triple in the standard model and quad in the Plus variant. Let's look at all its features carefully.

Same brain, different size

Both the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S20 + mount a Dynamic AMOLED display with Quad HD + resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate and HDR10 + support. However, the diagonal size is different in the two smartphones: 6.2 inches for the S20 and 6.7 for the S20 +, which translates into a pixel density of 563 and 525 dpi respectively.

The two phones have a perforation in the center and an ultrasonic fingerprint reader under the panel, which joins the facial recognition to complete the duo of biometric authentication systems. And as a wrapper, a body that boasts a thick content and IP68 certification of resistance to water and dust.

Inside both phones, we find the Exynos 990, the most powerful Samsung processor to date. This 7 nm EUV chipset (ultraviolet lithography) is accompanied by the ARM Mali-G77 MP11 GPU and the Exynos Modem 5123, a 5G modem that gives these two new models compatibility with 5G NSA and SA networks.

The RAM options for the LTE and 5G versions are identical on both phones, 8 GB and 12 GB LPDDR5, respectively, the same as the operating system: Android 10 with Samsung's One UI 2.0 layer. Yes, there is a difference in storage, because to the 128 GB variant offered by the Galaxy S20 and the S20 + LTE, the S20 + 5G adds another with 256 GB and 512 GB. In all cases, expandable with a micro SD card of up to 1 TB.

More cameras and more resolution

Although these two new members of the Galaxy S family share the 10 MP front camera with f / 2.2 aperture, the rear camera - with 8K video recording in both cases and housed in a rectangular module - does present an important difference: it consists of three sensors in the case of the S20 and four in the case of the S20 +.

Thus, the two share an ultra-wide-angle of 12 MP f / 2.2, a wide-angle of 12 MP f / 1.8 and a telephoto lens of 64 MP f / 2.0, to which the Plus model adds a ToF sensor that Samsung calls DephVision. In both cases, the wide-angle and telephoto lenses have an OIS optical image stabilizer, and the hybrid zoom reaches 3 magnifications (30X in digital).

If you look now at the battery, the S20 has 4,000 mAh, while the S20 + rises to 4,500 mAh. Of course, both are compatible with fast charging and fast wireless charging. The connectivity options are identical in the two models, including the aforementioned compatibility with 5G networks.

Price and Release Date

Both the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S20 will be available in two RAM options, 8 GB for the LTE variant and 12 GB for the 5G model; However, while the Galaxy S20 will only be marketed with 128 GB for both versions, the S20 + will arrive in 128 GB for its LTE version and 128, 256 and 512 GB for the 5G version (which includes the Galaxy Buds + as a gift).

They are already in pre-sale, but will arrive on the market on March 13 in three different colors for each of them: gray (Cosmic Gray), blue (Cloud Blue) and black (Cosmic Black) for the Plus, and gray (Cosmic Gray), blue (Cloud Blue) and pink (Cloud Pink) for the standard. Prices are as follows:

  • Samsung Galaxy S20 LTE (8 GB / 128 GB): 909 euros.
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 5G (12 GB / 128 GB): 1,009 euros.
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 + LTE (8 GB / 128 GB): 1,009 euros.
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 + 5G (12 GB / 128 GB): 1,109 euros with Galaxy Buds + as a gift.
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 + 5G (12 GB / 512 GB): 1,259 euros with Galaxy Buds + as a gift.

The aperture is an opening or a hole through which light passes. Aperture controls the brightness of the image that travels through the lens and falls on the image sensor. The lower the f-stop number, the larger the diaphragm opening is, hence, the more light reaches the sensor. Usually, the f-stop number specified is the one that corresponds to the maximum possible diaphragm opening.

 Focal Length

 Focal Length

The focal length is the distance between the lens and the image sensor when the subject is in focus, usually stated in millimeters. The 35 mm equivalent indicates the focal length at which a full-frame camera will achieve an angle of view that's the same as the one of the camera of the mobile device. It is measured by multiplying the native focal length of the camera by the crop factor of the sensor. The crop factor itself can be determined as the ratio between the diagonal distances of the image sensor in the 35 mm camera and a given sensor.
