Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Specifications, Price and Release Date

Just like last year, Samsung promoted its first Galaxy Unpacked of the year not only to renew the Galaxy S line but also to present a foldable phone.

The Galaxy Z Flip is finally official. First, instead of offering an external screen that when unfolded becomes a tablet, the model aims to be more compact, with an external screen of an inch for basic information, and when opening offering a complete cell phone.

Comparisons with Motorola's Razr will be inevitable, but now that the mobile device industry has managed to implement a flexible touch screen the sky will be the limit and we will see the most diverse types of implementation in the coming months. A great advantage of the Z Flip compared to its rival is the ability of its folding mechanism to keep the smartphone "half-open", holding the device at a 90º angle.

Key Features

  • 6.7 "Dynamic AMOLED main screen with Full HD + resolution (2636x1080 pixels)
  • Folding display with a circular notch for the front camera and 21: 9 aspect ratio
  • 1.1-inch Super AMOLED external secondary screen and 300x112 pixel resolution
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus Platform
  • 8 GB of RAM
  • 256 GB of UFS 3.0 internal storage
  • 3,300 mAh battery with 15W charging and 9W wireless charging
  • Dimensions of 167.3 x 73.6 x 7.2 mm (open) and 87.4 x 73.6 x 17.3 mm (closed)
  • Weight of 183 grams
  • Android 10 with Samsung One UI 2.0
  • Available in black, lilac and gold
  • 10 MP front camera, f / 2.4 and 80º angle

Dual rear camera
  • 12 MP main sensor with f / 1.8 aperture and 78º angle
  • 12 MP secondary sensor with 123º wide-angle lens
With a 6.7-inch Infinity Flex AMOLED display, the Z Flip can appear larger than due to its 22: 9 aspect ratio, and also because it offers little "interference" when opened, as its edges are discreet and the front camera is offered by a hole notch, as in the Galaxy S20.

An interesting point of this screen is that it has the new proprietary technology from Samsung Ultra-Thin Glass. For the first time, the manufacturer replaced plastic - more prone to scratches - with an ultra-thin layer of glass, which offers more protection in this regard.

Firepower remains inside its body: it is equipped with the Snapdragon 855 Plus and 8 GB of RAM, in addition to 256 GB of internal memory, expandable via microSD card. If we take into account that both it and the Razr are in the same price range, here it is possible to take much more hardware without spending more.

While the new Galaxy S20 offers a number to lose sight of cameras, the Z Flip features three sensors: one front and two rear. The main camera has a resolution of 12 MP with an aperture of f / 1.8, showing that Samsung jumped even out of the lenses with a variable aperture as we saw in the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10, while the secondary sensor of 12 MP offers an ultra-wide lens with 123º of eyesight. The front camera is 10 MP with an aperture of f / 2.4.

While the Galaxy S20 Ultra reaches charging speeds of up to 45W, Samsung bet - due to technical limitations or by option - to insert a maximum charge of 15W into the Z Flip. By induction, it reaches only 9W. The battery capacity is 3,300mAh.

The Z Flip leaves the factory with Android 10, and due to the South Korean's history of bringing two updates to all its devices, we can expect it to survive at least until Android 12, from 2021-2022.

Price and Release Date

As for its price, the dream of many of us was that those initial rumors that it would be released for less than $ 1,000 were a reality. However, its price in the international market will be the US $ 1,380, which at least is still much less than that charged in the Galaxy Fold. It goes into pre-sale on February 14, at least in the United States.

Anyway, the Galaxy Z Flip offers a second approach in terms of folding by Samsung. While the first smartphone of its kind aimed at offering more productivity with an expandable screen, the Z Flip wants to be a compact product to be carried in your pocket, bags, while being with a design that makes it also almost a fashion accessory.

Samsung expects to sell 2.5 million units of it, while Fold did not reach 1 million, showing that the South Korean's plans will be more ambitious with this launch.

CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor)

ISO

ISO measures the sensitivity of the image sensor. Image sensors operate within a specific ISO range. The higher the ISO rating is, the more sensitive to light the sensor is.
50 - 800

Sensor format

The image sensor format is the shape and size of the image sensor. It is usually expressed in inches.
1/2.55"

Pixel size

Pixels are the basic building blocks of digital photography: they are the individual elements that capture light to compensate for your image. Pixels are usually measured in microns (μm).  Generally, the higher the sensor size, the greater the pixel size, the greater the pixel size. The more light you can take, the better your photo.
1.4 µm (micrometers)

Aperture

The aperture is an opening or a hole through which light passes. Aperture controls the brightness of the image that travels through the lens and falls on the image sensor. The lower the f-stop number, the larger the diaphragm opening is, hence, the more light reaches the sensor. Usually, the f-stop number specified is the one that corresponds to the maximum possible diaphragm opening.
f/1.8

Focal Length

The focal length is the distance between the lens and the image sensor when the subject is in focus, usually stated in millimeters. The 35 mm equivalent indicates the focal length at which a full-frame camera will achieve an angle of view that's the same as the one of the camera of the mobile device. It is measured by multiplying the native focal length of the camera by the crop factor of the sensor. The crop factor itself can be determined as the ratio between the diagonal distances of the image sensor in the 35 mm camera and a given sensor.

26 mm  *(35 mm / full frame)

Field of view

In photography, the Field of view (FoV) depends not only on the focal length of the lens but also on the sensor size. It is derived from the lens's angle of view and the sensor's crop factor. The lens's angle of view is a measure of the angle between the two farthest separated points within the frame measured diagonally. Simply put, this is how much of a scene in front of the camera will be captured by the camera's sensor.
