Qualcomm Introduces New Snapdragon 720G, 662 and 460 for Mid Range Smartphones

At the end of last year, Qualcomm launched three processing solutions aimed at high-end and premium-intermediate devices, the Snapdragon 865, 765 and 765G.

Now, the company has made the Snapdragon 720G, 662 and 460 official, three processors aimed at mid ranges, which arrive on the market bringing many of the latest mobile technologies to devices with the most affordable price range.

Unfortunately none of the three supports 5G, however, they still have features like compatibility with Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, a GNSS navigation system, better energy management, support for dual VoLTE and in the case of 720G even news in terms of Artificial Intelligence.

Snapdragon 720G

The most advanced chip of the three recently announced features 8-nanometer lithography, new Kryo 465 architecture and some game-oriented features found on the Snapdragon 765G, including HDR support, dynamic color range and high sound quality thanks to AptX Adaptive technology from Qualcomm.

Compared to the Snapdragon 712 it brings several innovations, including a new AI engine designed to deliver better overall and gaming performance (even bringing the ability to manage 120 Hz screens).

Speaking of the GPU, here is the Adreno 618, which delivers 15% more graphics performance compared to the Adreno 616 of the Snapdragon 712.

Here also stands out the presence of a new ISP for photo management, Bluetooth 5.1 and Quick Charge 4 Plus fast charging technology.

Snapdragon 662

This 11 nanometer processor debuts with Kryo 260 architecture and supports triple camera with smooth transition between them, something for the first time present in Qualcomm's 600 series of chips.

The GPU is the same as the one found in the Snapdragon 665, that is, the Adreno 610, which brings a beautiful performance upgrade when compared to the 512 of the Snapdragon 660.

In the field of photography, the new IA Hexagon 683 engine in combination with the ISP Spectra 340T delivers new possibilities, including expanded support for the HEIF format.

Snapdragon 460

The most modest of the trio is perhaps one that brings the most improvements, delivering an impressive 70% more performance when compared to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 450.

On the graphics side, the Adreno 610 GPU guarantees faster game startup and up to 60% better performance.

Like the Snapdragon 662, the 460 was also manufactured in 11-nanometer lithography, relying on the Kryo 240 architecture, which employs AI to offer substantial improvements in the user experience.

With support for LPDDR4 and LPDDR4X RAM (Up to 8 GB on the 1866 MHz frequency), it also delivers improvements in the photographic area, thanks to the ISP 340 that guarantees compatibility with triple cameras.

The first smartphones bringing the newly announced mid-range chips are expected to hit the market in the first quarter of 2020, one of the first being a Realme model with the Snapdragon 720G.

The other two chips are expected to start appearing on new smartphones only at the end of the year.
