Nokia 6.2, first impressions: triple camera, Android One and premium finish for a high-end mid-range

On the occasion of the IFA 2019 held in Berlin, HMD has decided to make the Nokia 6.2 and 7.2 official, its two new smartphones for the mid-range of 2019. Nokia has always stood out for trying to differentiate itself from its rivals at a stroke of software, although this year they have Looked for a turn other than this. The essence of last year remains, but relevant changes arrive, especially at the photographic level.

Although Nokia 7.2 is the most ambitious phone presented by the firm at the fair, the Nokia 6.2 is the HMD alternative to reign below 200 dollars, something that merits our attention. After his presentation, we had the opportunity to try it, so it is necessary to tell what we thought after the first impressions.

Democratizing the premium finish in the mid-range

The first thing that attracts attention when we hold the Nokia 6.2 in the hand is two factors. The first, the glass finish of its back, worthy of any other device located in a higher price range. On the other hand, although it weighs 180 grams and approaching 16 cm high, it is a smartphone that is quite comfortable at hand.

This rear part also has a rear fingerprint reader that will delight those who do not finish adapting to the readers under the screen, as well as a large circle that houses the triple camera that we will talk about later.

Returning to the matter of glass, Nokia has decided to cover both the screen and the back with Gorilla Glass 3, a solution that while not the most current, has proven its reliability in the past. Of course, as a good alternative to glass, it is a magnet of footprints, especially if the unit is dark. We have also been able to test the same phone in the white finish and, although the footprints are not appreciated so much, it will still be necessary to pass him a cloth from time to time.

As for the front of the device, we find an improved frontal use, with a rather pronounced bezel at the bottom, although with quite small side frames. The Nokia logo is still the protagonist in the lower bezel, and the drop-notch is the main guest at the top of the device.

On the right side of the device (looking straight ahead), we are facing the power and volume up or down buttons. Good ride, solid and without any slack, so little hits. What catches our attention is that, on the left side, we have a dedicated button for Google Assistant, just like other brands like Samsung do with Bixby. The assistant opens immediately after pressing this button and, taking into account the good integration of Google Assistant with Android One, we can only applaud the decision made in this case.

The screens can also shine in the mid-range, literally

One of the most complicated points in the mid-range is the theme of the screen. For less than 200 dollars we could think that no efforts have been centralized in the configuration of the panel, but it has not been so in the case of Nokia. The 6.2 has a 6.3-inch screen with Full HD + resolution, with IPS technology. They have decided to call this panel 'PureDisplay', because of the high dynamic range they ensure for it.

The phone converts the SDR content into HDR in real-time or, in other words, tries to obtain the maximum dynamic range of the multimedia we are consuming. This is achieved with a dedicated processor, called Pixelworks, which is responsible for improving this representation of HDR and color in real-time. Similarly, although we do not have nits data, they promise a high brightness under the maximum incidence of sunlight, as well as an automatic contrast improvement to make the screen look good under any circumstance.

Hardware content, latest software.

At the hardware level, the Nokia 6.2 is located between the input range and the mid-range. For the processor, we have opted for the Qualcomm 636 platform, which has almost two years of life, and that came to be a few steps below the Snapdragon 660.

The memory configurations start from 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory and can be increased to a configuration of 4 + 32 GB. As a negative point, note that both memories are eMMC 5.1, notably below in times of write/read speed compared to the UFS that is being democratized. In both cases, it will be possible to expand the internal memory using microSD cards.

The strengths come at the hand of its 3,500mAh battery, with which Nokia has promised us up to two days, something that we will have time to check in their respective analysis. On the other hand, we have a headphone jack ( rare Avis ) in the current times, and a USB Type-C port at the bottom.

This hardware is accompanied, how could it be otherwise in a Nokia phone, Android One, the cleanest version offered by Google to manufacturers. This implies three years of security updates and two years of major updates, to which we must add that HMD has promised that in the second quarter of 2020, all its phones will be updated to Android 10.

The triple camera and the wide-angle, by flag

The huge rear circle of the Nokia 6.2 houses three cameras. The first sensor is 16 megapixels, with aperture f / 1.8. The second is a wide-angle of 8 megapixels, 118ยบ and with aperture f / 2.2. Finally, a 5-megapixel sensor. As a good smartphone for 2019, artificial intelligence is added when shooting, promising improvements, especially in the night. At the video level, the phone is capable of recording in 4K resolution, something to consider in its price range.

In our tests, the camera has not stood out excessively when photographing. However, it is important here to point out again that the software is not definitive, so you will have to wait for the analysis to see how the camera behaves.

At the selfie level, we found a good cut considering that it is the front camera and the range of the device. Non-absence, the skin treatment and detail are somewhat erratic, with somewhat pale tones and lack of appreciable detail.

The portrait in the rear camera also offers a relatively good crop. At the level of color, we find a somewhat more vibrant interpretation, although the skin is still too washed. Perhaps in the final version, we will find a less aggressive treatment.

The situation somewhat complicated by the movement of people, although we have noticed some problem with the shutter times. It may be a software problem, although low processor power often causes slow shots.

The wide-angle always implies loss of quality. However, we have 118 degrees at our disposal, to capture much more content than can be found with the main sensor.

In short, the Nokia 6.2 comes to stand out in the average with three main factors. The first, Android One, one of the most interesting configurations in economic mobiles, for its good aging (with periodic updates), and its good performance due to the absence of bloatware.

The second, its triple camera configuration, which brings that versatility that begins to democratize in the mid-range, supported by artificial intelligence that promises a good night performance.

Finally, the factor of cost less than 200 dollars and offer practically everything that can be asked of a mid-range: good screen, camera, battery, processor and ... headphone jack! As always, we will wait for the full review to see how it behaves with the definitive software, but the Nokia 6.2 points ways.
